Home kitchen label rules in Alberta
The short version
A label on food made in a home kitchen in Alberta carries six things wherever you are: what it is, everything in it heaviest first, the major allergens, who made it, how to reach you, and the date. On top of that comes the wording below.
What goes on the label
- The product name, in words a customer would use.
- Every ingredient, heaviest first.
- The major allergens, called out separately from the ingredient list.
- Who made it: your name or your business name.
- How to reach you.
- The date it was made.
What the label has to say
Alberta describes what the label has to get across rather than publishing a sentence to copy. This is a common form of it, read on 5 August 2026:
This food is prepared in a home kitchen that is not subject to inspection.
Wording close to this is generally accepted.
A second line goes on the label as well, alongside that one:
This food is not for resale.
The detail
Food Regulation (AR 31/2006) s. 52.2(1)(f) for a low-risk home-prepared food operator, and the parallel s. 36(1)(d)(ii) for stallholders at public markets. Both require, prior to sale: (i) a statement that the food is prepared in a home kitchen that is not subject to inspection; (ii) a statement that the food is not for resale; (iii) the name, business name and email address or phone number of the operator; (iv) the name of the food product; (v) the date the food product was prepared. The labelling requirement does not apply to unprocessed horticultural products (s. 52.2(2)). Only low-risk (non time/temperature-controlled) food qualifies; higher-risk home food still needs a permit and inspection. s. 52.1(2) separately prohibits anyone from reselling the food or using it as an ingredient in food for sale, which is why the not-for-resale line exists. No point size specified anywhere in the regulation.
