# Cottage food label requirements in Utah

> Informational only, not legal or food-safety advice. Verify with Utah Department of Agriculture and Food before printing labels. Last checked 2026-08-05.

## What goes on the label

1. The product name, in words a customer would use.
2. Every ingredient, heaviest first.
3. The major allergens, called out separately from the ingredient list.
4. Who made it: your name or your business name.
5. How to reach you.
6. The date it was made.

## The required statement

As published for Utah:

> Not for Resale – Processed and prepared without the benefit of state or local inspection

Published as fixed text: reproduce it exactly.

## Detail

Utah has TWO separate routes and only one of them uses this statement. (1) Home Consumption and Homemade Food Act (Utah Code Title 4, Chapter 5a): no UDAF registration, business licence required, and this disclaimer plus a complete allergen list must be on the product. UDAF publishes the disclaimer as a single line containing two distinct demands — 'Not for Resale' AND 'Processed and prepared without the benefit of state or local inspection'. Print the whole line; dropping the 'Not for Resale' half is a violation, and it is a real restriction, not boilerplate — this route is direct producer-to-end-consumer only. (2) Registered Cottage Food Establishment: application to UDAF, recipes and labels reviewed and approved by a UDAF compliance officer, food handler permit, consultation visit and a registration fee. That route is inspected, its labels are approved individually by UDAF, and it does NOT carry a not-inspected statement — so never print this line on a registered cottage food label.
