# Cottage food label requirements in Nebraska

## What goes on the label

1. The product name, in words a customer would use.
2. Every ingredient, heaviest first.
3. The major allergens, called out separately from the ingredient list.
4. Who made it: your name or your business name.
5. How to reach you.
6. The date it was made.

## The required statement

Nebraska describes what the label has to get across rather than publishing a sentence to copy. A common form of it:

> This food was prepared in a kitchen that is not subject to regulation and inspection by the regulatory authority and may contain allergens.

Close wording is generally accepted.

## Detail

This is not only a package label. The same notification must be given at the point of sale at a farmers market, fair, festival, craft show or other public event; and for pickup or delivery sales it must be given at the producer's home, on the producer's website if one exists, and in any print, radio, television or Internet advertising. A label-printing feature alone does not make a Nebraska producer compliant. The package itself must carry the producer's name and mailing address; time/temperature control foods additionally need ingredients in descending order by weight. Neb. Rev. Stat. 81-2,280 preempts local ordinances not in conformance with it, so a county or city cannot layer on extra label rules.
